Denmark Retail Foods 2025

Denmark’s food retail landscape is dominated by brick-and-mortar supermarkets, which are typically located within walking distance and operate with extended hours, reducing the reliance on e-commerce. Most stores range in size from 500 to 1,500 square meters, and Denmark has the highest number of supermarkets per capita in the EU. Danish consumers shop frequently—about three times a week—and spend roughly 10 percent of their disposable income on food and beverages. However, the market remains conservative with limited innovation. The high density of stores relative to the small population can hinder individual store performance and may deter investment in modern retail concepts. Additionally, Denmark’s strong foodservice sector, offering affordable ready-to-eat meals, has constrained the growth of convenience product offerings in supermarkets.
